Alexis Horde Vo at State of GIS

GKL PhD candidate Alexis Horde Vo gave one of his first presentations on his PhD work at the State of GIS Victoria meeting on Friday 13 June. His talk, “Geographic Information Retrieval for Place Names with AI”, focused on using a technique called retrieval augmented generation (RAG) to assist automating the task of identifying the persons commemorated in placenames, an issue that has significant implications for geographic naming authorities, such as Geographic Names Victoria. Alexis has combined a BERT-like deep learning model and open knowledge graphs, as an initial first RAG architecture to tackle this problem.
